There are certain things in life that come together naturally and one of them are cigars and St. Patrick’s Day. Unfortunately for those in Washington, DC, there is currently a smoking ban in effect. Does that mean that St. Patrick’s Day will be a cigar-less event?
The Universe is not that cruel, it seems. According to NBC Washington, Irishmen in DC just might be given a break on this special day:
This St. Patrick’s Day, nearly a thousand members of DC’s Irish community may be puffing on stogies while they get their drink on, despite the District’s ban on smoking in bars and restaurants.
Legislation has been introduced that if passed, would allow the
Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, a social group made up of DC’s elite Irishman, bypass the smoking ban and be allowed to smoke cigars at their annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner at the Capitol Hilton, the dcexaminer.com reported.
Councilman Jack Evans, the one who introduced the bill, is a member of the Friendly Sons organization.
Evans’ bill is the first to request an exemption for a single group since the ban took effect on Jan. 1, 2007.
Well, they have a month or so to have the bill passed and I am crossing my fingers for the members of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. I may not be part of that group nor am I in DC but hey, I can just feel their pain at the thought of not being able to celebrate that day with their favorite cigar.
