Flavored Cigars: Yes Or No?

July 27, 2008 By Cigar Blog

In case you didn’t know, flavored cigars are quite a big thing in many parts of the world. In fact, they attract not only adults but teenagers as well. And why wouldn’t they? If teens are attracted to cigarettes, why wouldn’t they be attracted to cigars as well? This is more understandable if the cigars are flavored. More so, if these cigars are sold as “loosies,” teens are able to buy them more easily.

This is the argument that the authorities over at Baltimore are banking on. They want to ban the sales of these cigars so that teenagers would not be able to buy them. The Baltimore Sun reports:

City health officials have received a large number of comments – pro and con – about a proposed ban on the sale of single cheap cigars, which tend to be smoked by young people who like them because they come in flavors such as grape, cherry and vanilla.

The city’s proposal has garnered national attention because if the ban is enacted, Baltimore would be the first municipality to take such a stand against the cigars, which are sold under the names Black & Mild, White Owl and The Game. On the street, the cigars are sometimes called “blunts” or “loosies.”

Naturally, there are those who are for the proposal while there are those who are against it. Personally, I think that they should just create stricter enforcement measures so as to restrict the teenagers’ access to these cigars. What do you think?

Best Cigar Tips

July 19, 2008 By Cigar Blog

If you are new to the world of cigars, there are probably a lot of things that you may not know yet. This is what I like to call “best practices.” These are habits that the more seasoned cigar smokers would know about but may be unknown to the newbies. Let’s take a look at some of these tips.

Puff but do not inhale.
I do not know too many people who, when they smoke cigars, inhale the smoke. Many smoke cigars for the flavor – this means that you do not have to actually inhale the cigar. Enjoy the draw and live longer!

Find a good companion for your cigar.

I am talking about a drink. Most people I know like to drink while smoking a cigar. There is no rule against this, of course and drinking is actually a good accompaniment to a good cigar. The idea, though, is to have a drink that will enhance the flavor of your cigar and not drown it.

Age your cigars before smoking.
If you buy a new bundle of cigars, do not immediately smoke them. Of course, you can do so if you want but you would not get the best out of the cigars. Rather, you should unwrap them and place them in humidors for a few months before smoking them. If you want a cigar that you can smoke immediately, go to your local cigar shop and buy individual sticks that they have already aged.

Teen Cigar Smoking Up In Canada

June 24, 2008 By Cigar Blog

teen smoker
When should people start smoking? We all know that smoking has ill effects on our health. There is no going around that fact. Yet if you think like me, you also probably believe in the idea of free will. It is simply that people should be free to do what they want as long as they are not stepping on the freedom of other people. It makes sense, doesn’t it? But when it comes to smoking, is it ok to say that anyone should be allowed to smoke? Teenagers, for example?

I do not have a very solid argument against teenagers smoking but I do know that if I had a teenage son or daughter, I would not want them to be smoking. Maybe they can choose to do so on their own later in life, say when they get out of college, but at that age, that is not an option.

That is why I was disturbed by the news I read about teenagers getting into cigars and cigarillos. UPI reports:

Thirty-five percent of Canadian teens in grades 10 to 12 say they had tried cigars, cigarillos and little cigars, a survey indicates.
The Youth Smoking Survey released by the University of Waterloo also said that while 39.5 percent of boys and 30 percent of girls say they tried cigars, cigarillos and little cigars, 48 percent say they had tried cigarettes.

The survey of 71,000 students in Grades 5 to 12 in 467 schools across Canada conducted by the Centre for Behavioural Research and Program Evaluation during the 2006-07 school year was funded by Health Canada.

Don’t you feel concern for such news?
