In preparation for the Intertabac Trade Show in Dortmund, Germany, beginning on Sept. 14th, Drew Estate has announced the Liga Privada 10 Selección de Mercado cigar as an exclusive for international markets.
The cigar is based on the Liga Privada 10-Year Aniversario, which was first announced in 2018 (commemorating Liga Privada’s 10th anniversary) but didn’t officially become regularly available until 2022. This includes being rolled in the same 6? x 52 toro format, complete with “an unfinished foot and the Cola de Pescado (fishtail) head.”
The name is Spanish for Market Selection, being a nod to the old-school cigar marketing practices of selecting different wrapper shades per market. As such, Liga Privada 10 Selección de Mercado uses a similar Connecticut Criollo wrapper found on the Liga 10, though it is a lighter rosado shade. This leaf—which is grown exclusively for Drew Estate by one farmer in the Connecticut River Valley—surrounds a Mexican binder and a tweaked filler blend of Nicaraguan and Pennsylvanian tobaccos (the original 2018 cigar used Nicaragua/Honduras in pre-release, but is now listed as Nicaragua/Pennsylvania).
“Selección de Mercado is Drew’s first truly global brand drop,” says Drew Estate Founder and President, Jonathan Drew. “Liga Privada is notoriously bold, dense, hearty, earthy and robust … true to the Connecticut River Valley. Seleccion de Mercado is different!!! It’s an experience of Liga Privada that’s truly unexpected, with the international cigar smoker at the forefront of our mind throughout our creative stages of development. The Selección de Mercado blend is like, ‘Yo homie, I didn’t think anybody could get a smoke like this in a cigar that’s not Cuban, but this Liga Privada nails it. That’s wild.”
While the regular Liga 10 is quite full-bodied, the Selección de Mercado is billed as medium, and is described as “deeply balanced, bold and sophisticated, with luxurious espresso notes that complement the Connecticut Criollo’s earthiness.” The cigars are rolled by the buncher/roller teams that handle the Liga 10 at Drew Estate’s factory in Nicaragua. Finally, the cigars feature similar 10-count packaging found on the Liga 10, with pricing not yet revealed.
