One of Arturo Fuente’s tobacco warehouses caught fire yesterday, sadly destroying the building and its tobacco inventory.
Located in Villa González, Dominican Republic, the building is said to have ignited around 5:30pm yesterday, May 17th. Firefighters were on the scene for roughly nine hours, finally getting the fire under control by 2:30am this morning.
It is estimated that one million pounds of aged tobacco was lost to the fire, including the Fuentes’ prized Chateau de la Fuente leaf, which is the company’s signature tobacco found throughout all Arturo Fuente cigars, as well as being the wrapper component on the OpusX cigar.
But while Warehouse #3 was lost, it is reported that the family considers themselves lucky that the fire started during the day, being contained in time to save their other nearby warehouses.
Fire is, of course, no stranger to the premium cigar business, with the William Ventura factory—also located in the DR—burning down last September.
As of this writing, there is no word on the cause of the fire, and the incident is currently under investigation.
