The road to Liga Privada’s third core-line addition was long, winding, and not without a healthy set of speed bumps; but at long last, the Liga Privada H99 Connecticut Corojo arrived in 2022. The cigar first made its soft debut appearance back in 2018 at the industry’s annual trade show, coinciding with Liga Privada’s 10th anniversary celebrations. Due to incredibly low supply of the cigar’s wrapper—which is a hybrid variant of Corojo seed grown on small plots of land in the Connecticut River Valley—the cigars had to be raffled off to a handful of retailers at launch. This ultra-small-batch release strategy continued until 2021, where the H99 became slightly more available as event exclusives for Drew Diplomat-authorized retailers and the like. Finally, in February of 2022, the Liga Privada H99 was announced as a regular-production release, being joined by the limited Phineas Gage size in May and the core-line Robusto in July. At long last, the H99 is here to stay, and our Top 10 list has been patiently awaiting its arrival. Similar to the famed T52 cigar before it, the H99 makes use of a Cuban-seed hybrid wrapper, with the T52 typically being described as an American Habano, while the H99 is based on Corojo. The binder swaps Brazilian Mata Fina for Mexican San Andrés, and the fillers are similarly Nicaraguan and Honduran. This makes for an exceptionally thick and oily smoking texture from the start, showing off a powerhouse experience chock-full of dense, gritty, gooey flavor. It’s not intense for intensity’s sake, either, with a level of balance and complexity not expected from such a brooding experience. This includes noteworthy flavors along the lines of candied beef jerky, black pepper, smooth chocolate, cinnamon, brownie batter, and French-press coffee.
