The legend of the Goldie began with the famed Laguito No. 2 debut in 2012, helping to put the historic La Palina brand back onto the map for the modern era. The cigars were known for their elite craftsmanship, with the entire run of 10,000 petit lanceros being crafted (including bunching and rolling) by the late Maria Sierra, a category 9 torcedor from Cuba. Combine this with the blend’s inclusion of medio tiempo tobacco (a rare priming found above the conventionally highest ligero priming on a small percentage of tobacco plants)—being among the first cigars to popularize this leaf—and you have the makings for one of the most highly regarded limited series in the modern premium cigar scene.
The second release in the Goldie line was the Laguito No. 5—a fatter robusto extra that first arrived in 2013. In recent years, La Palina has begun cycling back through the various Goldie sizes, designating each successive release with identifiers such as Series 2, Series 3, etc. For 2023, the Laguito No. 5 saw its return, now being rolled by Lopez “Chino” Perez, whom Sierra had trained as her replacement during her past three years with El Titan de Bronze. This release not only met the high standards of the 2013 original; it may have exceeded them. The cigar is skillfully crafted, no doubt, but it’s the profile that truly shines. With a creamy texture, the Goldie Laguito No. 5 Series 2 provides the ideal level of punch through the retrohale, with each aspect combining to bring out notes of white pepper, buttered toast, nougat, and a signature umami characteristic that can only be likened to bone marrow.
