News: No. 20 Cigar of the Year 2023 – The Lunar Cameroon

It’s never been a secret that Fratello Cigars has ties to space exploration, with the company’s founder, Omar de Frias, working at NASA during Fratello’s founding in 2013. Despite this impressive narrative, the company hadn’t leaned too heavily on such intergalactic imagery, instead being focused on a hybrid of Italian and Dominican concepts throughout their brands and marketing.

This changed in 2023, taking advantage of the company’s milestone 10th anniversary to open the door up for the next frontier. Aside from The Dojo’s own space-themed After BurnR collaboration with Fratello, the headlining act was a trio of cigars dubbed The Lunar. This was a unique project, to say the least. In what’s undoubtedly one of the most ambitious branding trades ever seen in the realm of premium cigars, Fratello’s imagery has been placed on a space craft (the Nova-C lunar lander) destined for the moon. In turn, Intuitive Machines’ (the company behind the actual lunar lander) logo is found on Fratello’s The Lunar cigar packaging. Not only this, but the cigars’ packaging itself has been made to resemble a miniaturized version of the actual lander, which is scheduled to launch in the coming weeks.

The Lunar line encompasses three cigar blends, one of which—The Lunar Cameroon—has earned a place amongst our Top 20 cigars of 2023. Positioned as more of an ultra-premium blend from Fratello, the cigar features an Ecuadorian Cameroon wrapper, a Dominican binder, and fillers from Nicaragua and the US. From concept to packaging/presentation to the smoking experience itself, The Lunar Cameroon delivers, being one of the most fun and creative projects in recent memory. Rolled in a single toro size, The Lunar Cameroon offers a medium body, hitting the palate with a range of lightly zesty cabinet spices and warm overall characteristics. This is joined by a thicker-than-expected texture, lingering with sweet nuts and cream through the finish.
