Did you know that Long Beach has stricter smoking laws than the entire state of California? Yep, if you thought that California has pretty strict smoking laws, wait till you get to Long Beach! Over there, you even cigar lounges are not authorized. Talk about repression!
Luckily, some council members have come around to realize that perhaps, cigar smokers have their rights as well. That is why a proposal was set forth. This proposal allows for the operation of cigar lounges. These would be indoor establishments that allow – and welcome – those who want to have a nice smoke.
Naturally, the proposal still has a lot of opponents. In fact, even the city council members are not unanimous in approving the proposal. The Press Telegram has this report:
“I totally support the ban that we have on smoking in public places,” said Councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga, who had proposed changing the law.
But, she said, the city policy should be in line with state law.
“Previously there had not been any enforcement of these private cigar lounges, and now there has been,” Uranga said. “There’s been some confusion because the state allows it and the city doesn’t.”
Several smoking lounges operate in the city, though they do so illegally, Shannon confirmed Wednesday.
Uranga’s proposal was co-sponsored by Councilmen Dee Andrews and Val Lerch.
Aside from the city council members, other groups have expressed their dissent. They think that the ordinance should be left as it is. It seems, though, that the amendment is going to be approved. Good for you Long Beach smokers!
