After a relatively slow release schedule for Southern Draw Cigars over the past two years—which the company attributes to “COVID restrictions and supply chain challenges”—the Texas-based brand has announced Morning Glory as their latest addition to the portfolio.
Morning Glory follows the company’s floral theme, naming the cigar after the Ipomoea tricolor or Heavenly Blue plant, known for its curling vines and flowers that bloom in the early morning.
Once the flower closes in the mid-afternoon, the flower never opens again, instead it produces seeds and the vine produces only new flowers the next morning. Each bloom, and in our case, each cigar is a symbol of hope and the fresh start we embrace with each new sunrise that is granted.
The cigar is said to have been under development for many years, being rolled in over 20 sizes and smoked by the Southern Draw family as they perfected the recipe. Like the Rose of Sharon brand, the cigars feature a Connecticut Shade wrapper, though the blend is said to be milder in intensity—described as “our gentlest blend.”
Based on generous customer feedback, we agree the RoS carries a flavor too substantial to be considered a “lead-pipe cinch” for all new cigar smokers or those that primarily enjoy smooth and mild classic blends. Sure, the MORNING GLORY can be enjoyed anytime, and we expect it will be, but it has the manners and taste in a triumvirate of sizes to be THE first cigar every day.
While Morning Glory is intended as a regular production, the cigars will first debut in two “test” sizes exclusive to Cigars International. This includes the Lonsdale (6½” x 46) and Perfecto (6¾” x 52), the latter in a box pressed format. These sizes are offered in the Create-Your-Own CIGARfest – 64 Cigar – Deluxe Cigar Package, sold at CI retail superstores between September 24th and October 29th, 2022.
The regular-production version will be offered in three sizes: Rothschild (4¾” x 50), Short Churchill (6½” x 48), and Diadema (6¾” x 52). Pre-sales will begin for retailers on Nov. 15th and are expected to begins shipping Q1 2023.
