Longtime fans of Room101 will appreciate the galactic saga—one of the most beloved in the brand’s portfolio—that is Johnny Tobacconaut. The cigar first arrived in 2015, being a Nicaraguan puro out of Honduras that offered a space-themed take on American pioneer Johnny Appleseed. It was followed shortly thereafter by Chief Cool Arrow, then reemerging with a new blend in 2021, being an exclusive for retailer Luxury Cigar Club.
In 2023, Johnny Tobacconaut became a regular offering for the first time. The modern rendition is colloquially dubbed Jonathan P. Tobacconaut by Room101 founder, Matt Booth, as the eponymous character is said to be the son of the original Johnny Tobacconaut. Like the 2021 release before it, the cigar is rolled out of A.J. Fernández’s factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, featuring a Connecticut wrapper and Nicaraguan filler; however, the binder ingredient has been swapped for a Mexican leaf. From the outset, the cigar is quintessential Room101, including a paper sleeve and twisted tissue outer layer on each cigar. But the blend itself is a different story, being quite the departure from the dark smoking profiles the brand has become known for. Instead, the modern Johnny Tobacconaut is bright and citrusy, though maintaining a fuller body than the Connecticut genre is known for. We found the cigar to be quick out the gate, wasting no time in delivering a lively experience and being especially noticeable through the retrohale. This includes notes of orange zest and white pepper, as well as cedar, sage, and a nice malty component.
